Scholarships
In 2005 the Davis College and/or the Division awarded scholarships worth some $25,000 to undergraduate students enrolled in one of the four majors in the Division of Resource Management. The Division also employed several undergraduate students, usually seniors, on research and service projects.
In fall 2005 more sixteen Division of Resource Management graduate
students were employed as graduate research assistants (GRA). In
addition to a salary, a GRA receives a full tuition waiver. In most
of the recent years, at least one GRA received a supplemental fellowship
of $1,000. GRA benefits include
health coverage. An additional number of graduate students were
employed on an hourly basis and some received a partial tuition
waiver. Thanks to the Torries Fund created by the generous conctirubitons friends of Thomas Torries and the Program
in Agricultural and Resource Economics, the Division was also able
to subsidize graduate students to attended the annual meetings of the American Agricultural Economics Association. and the Northeast Agricultural and Resource Economics Association, respectively.
Scholarships for Specific Majors:
Walter W. Armentrout Scholarship: Awarded to a student majoring in Agribusiness Management and Rural Development or Environmental and Natural Resource Economics. In 2005 one $500 scholarship was awarded. This scholarship is named in honor of the late Professor Walter Warlaw Armentrout who served as chair of Agricultural Economics from 1935 until 1961. Butler, Kelly, McGhee and Lawrence Scholarship: Awarded to a major in Agricultural and Environmental Education. In 2005 one $1,000 scholarship was awarded. The scholarship honors the contributions of for emeritus professors of Agricultural and Environmental Education.
Lynn Miller Creative Writing Award: Awarded to a major in Landscape Architecture. The award goes to the winner of an annual writing competition. In 2004 the winner received $500. The name of the award gratefully acknowledges the vision and generosity of Lynn Miller who donated the money to encourage excellence in writing among landscape architects.
Paul Nesselroad Scholarship: This scholarship was created in 2003 by a donation from the family of Professor Emeritus Paul Nesselroad and is awarded annually to an undergraduate student in the Division of Resource Management and to an undergraduate student in the Division of Family and Consumer Sciences. In 2005 a Division student received a $1,000 scholarship.
Jack Paules Scholarship: Awarded to juniors in Landscape Architecture. In 2005 one $1,000 scholarships was awarded. This scholarships honors the memory and contributions of Professor Jack Paules, a past chair of Landscape Architecture. Link to tribute to Jack Paules.
RGS Scholarship, in Memory of Clifford W. Collier: Awarded to a major in Landscape Architecture who is a Pennsylvania resident. In 2005 one $1,000 scholarship was awarded. The scholarship is funded by Richard G. Stauffer, founder and owner of RGS, a landscape architectural firm in Pennsylvania. The scholarship is given in memory of the late Clifford W. Collier who served as landscape architecture extension specialist and faculty member at West Virginia University. Link to tribute to Clifford W. Collier.
Thomas F. Torries Student Actualization Fund: Proceeds from this endowment fund professional travel, special events, etc. for graduate and exceptional undergraduate students in Agricultural and Resource Economics. The endowment was established in 2001 by family and friends of the late Professor Torries, to honor his commitment to students.In 2005 the fund supported student travel to conferences and provided a stipend to the winner of the first Torries Outstanding Ph.D. Student Research Award. Other scholarships are available on a competitive basis from the College and University. They include scholarships for undergraduate students and research and travel funds for doctoral students.
