Course DescriptionThe reflective seminar provides an opportunity for students to take stock of their field based experiences. Professional issues and problems will be identified and discussed. Ethics and misconceptions about professional practice will be examined. Ideas for strengthening preparation and experiential activities will also be explored.
Course ObjectiveThe course is designed to help the participant facilitate his or her transition from student to professional practitioner.
Course Policies The following course policies will remain in effect throughout the entire semester.
Grading Scale
All assignments should reflect the students best individual efforts.
MIX Account: All students are required to activate and maintain their MIX account. MIX will be used on a regular basis to communicate with students in this course. Failure to maintain and check your MIX account will not be accepted as an excuse. If your MIX account is inactive for 120 days, it will be disabled. You will need assistance with MIX, please call the OIT HelpDesk at 293-4444 ext 1.
Grading Rubric – Electronic Portfolio
Late Work Policy All assignment deadlines will be strictly enforced. NO ASSIGNMENT WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE DUE DATE UNLESS PRIOR APPROVAL HAS BEEN GRANTED BY THE INSTRUCTOR. Deadline exemptions will be limited to medical/family emergencies, etc.
Course Assignments
Field Experience Basic Information (Due: February 8, 2008) – Students will provide the instructor with basic information on their field experience including:
Reflection Log (Due: May 2, 2008) – Students will maintain a detailed daily reflection log that provides a chronology of the field based experience and related activities and issues.
Electronic Portfolio (Due: May 2, 2008) – Students will develop a portfolio that documents their professional preparation and field based experiences. The portfolio should contain the elements outlined in the “Portfolio Development Guide.” The criteria include:Ø Totally electronic Ø Materials must be submitted in appropriate electronic formats (see details to follow) Ø CD must open automatically when inserted into the computer’s CD/DVD drive Ø All links must work
Report #1 (Due: May 2, 2008) – The second report will consist of a 750 word essay that reflects on your field experience. The report must be submitted electronically.
Portfolio Development Guide
Résumé (all students) (PDF) Create a résumé using the style learned in AGEE 421/AGEE 110. In a two-column format, you must include occupational objective, education, professional experience, work experience, and honors and activities.
References (all students) (PDF) You must provide complete mailing addresses and telephone numbers for 3-5 professional references.
Philosophy (all students) (PDF) Your own philosophy is very important because it provides focus and emphasis for work in your profession. Working to communicate your philosophy helps you to become aware of your own goals and values, which prepares you to integrate them with the goals and values espoused by your district and your community. Your statement of philosophy is a description of your own goals and beliefs.
In approximately one page, provide the reader with a synopsis of what you believe about the profession in which you completed your field experience.
Student Teaching Assignment (student teachers) (PDF) Describe your student teaching situation in detail. Include information on the school, community setting, teacher(s), students, courses offered, etc.
Field Experience Assignment (other professional field experience students) (PDF) Describe your field experience placement situation in detail. Include information on the business/organization, community setting, colleagues(s), clients/customers, etc.
Lesson Plans (student teachers) (PDF) Include lesson plans (minimum 5) which you created that utilize the following techniques/ methods: ü Illustrated lecture ü Discussion ü Demonstration ü Problem solving ü Other
List of knowledge and skills (competencies) (other professional field experience students) (PDF) Include a description (can be partially in the form of a list) of the knowledge and skills a candidate would need to enter and succeed in the profession you completed your field experience.

Job Responsibilities (other professional field experience students) (PDF) Include a description of the job responsibilities you performed as a part of your field experience. Be specific.
Summary of student teaching experiences (student teachers) (PDF) Include a summary of the teaching experiences you performed as a part of your field experience. Be specific. Include lessons/units taught, courses taught, SAE visits completed, FFA activities, adult education experiences, etc.
Evaluation of the field-based experience (other professional field experience students) (PDF) Reflect on your field experience and evaluate your success. Ø What skills did you learn? Ø Did you make an impact? Ø How could the experience be improved?
Transcript (all students) (PDF) Include an unofficial transcript of your grades.
Evaluations: Student teaching (student teachers) (PDF) Include a copy of the 5100 form, D1, & D2.
Evaluations: Employer (other professional field experience students) (PDF) I need at least one written evaluation (could be a letter) from your immediate supervisor.

Creating a PDF File from a Microsoft Word Document with Acrobat: (Adobe Acrobat PDF Writer must be previously installed to create a PDF file)
Create a PDF file using a scanner with Acrobat 1. To create a PDF file from your picture or document, first open up Adobe Acrobat Professional and on the toolbar click on create PDF - from scanner. 2. A window will come up that will ask for the type of scanner and a few other miscellaneous things. Use all the default options, and select the type of scanner that you have connected to the computer. 3. Once you have completed those changes, click on the scan button and the scan program installed on that computer will appear. 4. From the list, select the type of scanning. For pictures it is recommended to use True Color, RGB, your DPI is recommend to be at 300. 5. The next step is to preview your scanned document or image by clicking on the preview button. This will show you what the scanned picture or document will look like. 6. Select the area to scan using the marquee lines (dashed lines) and click on the scan button. 7. The scanner will complete the scan and Adobe Acrobat Professional will automatically open up with your newly scanned image which can be saved as a PDF. If you are satisfied with the scan, click on file and then save as to save your picture or document as a PDF file in your portfolio folder. Do not use an apostrophe in the name.
