About Agricultural and Resource Economics
The faculty in Agricultural and Resource Economics offer the BS degree with majors in Agribusiness Management and Rural Development, and in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics.
At the graduate level, they offer the MS in Agricultural and Resource Economics and the PhD in Natural Resource Economics.
Study in the ARE Program encourages interdisciplinary thinking and the development of professional skills and knowledge to solve practical problems in business, not-for-profit organizations, and in local, state, and national government agencies.
Program graduates are working in a wide range of positions, depending on their interests and preparation. Many work in businesses related to agriculture and forestry, or just businesses serving a less urban clientele. Government employment includes position with Cooperative Extension, Natural Resource Conservation Service, US Environmental Protection Agency. Among the non-profit organizations that have hired graduates from the ARE Program are the World Bank, Resources for the Future (RFF), and the California Environmental Defense Fund.
Students wishing to pursue a career in environmental policy or research should plan on also earning a graduate degree as employment in this area is highly competitive.
The faculty encourages students to conduct research and practice and enhance their communication skills (oral and written). The ability to conduct basic research combined with good communication skills do much to enhance the future graduate's success in the job market.
