Supporting and Sustaining Entrepreneurial Communities: A Cooperative, Community-Based Approach

The primary focus of this project is to:

  • Work with regional clusters to foster communiyt-based economic developmenent.
  • Identify best practices coming out of visioning.
  • Engage in community-directed research, using university and community members to business development, and with development of entrepreneurial opportunities, in general.
  • Link financial resources to entrepreneurial opportunties.
  • Identify activities and outcomes for communities and funders.

Map of clusters where we have conducted projects:

Yellow: Greenbier, Monroe, Pocahontas, and Summer Counties

Red: McDowell and Wyoming Counties

Blue: Webster and Braxton Counties

Green: Kanawha Valley Cluster (does not perfectly coincide with the counties shown)

Lightstone Community Development Corporation, a non-profit organization with headquarters in Pendleton County is our partner on this project

Benedum Foundation is financially supporting this project with a grant that started in summer 2004 and will run through February 2006.

Several units at West Virginia University are engaged in this project, including the Division of Resource Management, Extension, and the Office of Service Learning.
