Activities at WVU:
- Develop and update a geographically referenced information system identifying mine sites with large volume (>1000 gpm) discharges. Correlate relevant information, including tourism and unemployment data, as GIS coverages, for the purpose of developing the best use of these underutilized water resources.
- Advising Marion County Parks and Recreation Commission (MCPARC) on the conversion of an acid mine water treatment plant into a recreational fishing park.
- Principal investigator for a Northeast Regional Aquaculture Center (NRAC) grant that designed a plastic U-shaped raceway for commercial production. This research compared the fixed and variable costs with a traditional concrete system.
- Helping commercial producers in West Virginia obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and to stay in compliance through proper waste treatment.
- Editor of the quarterly Fish Tales Newsletter published by WVU’s Extension Service. This publication can be accessed on the web at: http://www.wvu.edu/~agexten/aquaculture/newsletter.htm
- Develop and update a geographically referenced information system identifying fish producers and fee fishing locations in West Virginia.
- Develop a brochure indicating the locations of all fee fishing sites in West Virginia and distribute the brochure throughout the state where tourists will see them.
- Conduct research / demonstration projects on mine sites in an effort to develop the sites for sustainable aquaculture production.
- Work with mining companies and the WV-Dept. of Environmental Protection to approve the modification of mining permits for sustainable commercial fisheries as a post-mining land use.
- Coordinate the Yield Verification Study at two commercial sites in West Virginia.
- Oversee the development of the WVU aquaculture web site.
- Disseminate information to stakeholders in West Virginia.
- Technical Advisory Committee: Northeast Regional Aquaculture Center
Awards:
- Provisional patent (inventor) for development of a new plastic raceway tank.
- World Aquaculture Society’s Best Poster award for the 2006 ( Florence, Italy) annual meetings. Poster Title: Trout Culture as a Post-mining Land Use in West Virginia A Case Study.
